All sizes and types of backer rod
Your chinking will last a long time if it is properly applied, using backer rod. Backer Rod acts as a bond breaker, allowing the chink to adhere strongly to the wood on both side of the gap while not sticking to the Backer Rod. This allows the chink to stretch and contract when the logs move seasonally. Backer Rod can also fill spaces while enabling the chink to maintain its optimum sealant thickness. For maximum performance chink should be no more than ½” thick and no less than Ό” thick.
Several types of Backer Rod are available.

Closed Cell (extruded closed cell polyethylene)
This type will not hold water and actually repels moisture. This is a stiffer rod, available in rolls or coils, in a wide assortment of diameters from Ό” to 2”. This is the most economical choice.

Open Cell
Softer and more pliable, this style is easier to install. It will compress more to fit a wider range of joint sizes. Open cell is packaged in larger volume rolls in 2 styles: full round, in diameters from 5/8” to 2”; and half-round, in diameters from 7/8” to 2”.

Grip Strip
Grip Strip has a trapezoidal shape and a texture that make it easy to wedge into joints. It can provide some extra insulation, and its flat surface allows for a consistent chink line. Grip Strip comes in 4’ lengths and a variety of widths from Ύ” to 5”.

Proform Brushes
Where form follows function
These brushes combine high performance with reasonable cost. Many brush and handle styles are available including ergonomic . White China bristle brushes are perfect for use with oil based materials, and PBT, a quality nylon filament, works beautifully with latex or oil.

Poly Foam Brushes
These brushes are a favorite for smoothing Log Jam chinking. They are available in 4 sizes from 1” to 4”.

Blue Ox Log Fastener
Save time and labor fastening logs together with Blue Ox log screws. No pre-drilling is required, the sharp gimlet point drills faster, and the Ό” hex washer head guards against overdriving. They are available in lengths from 4” to 14”.

Olylog Fasteners
These corrosion resistant log screws require no pre-drilling and are available in 16” lengths.

Osborn Brushes
The 4-diameter Osborn brush has nylon bristles, heavily impregnated with 80 grit silicon carbide abrasive, are perfect for removing the fuzzy grain raised by power washing, removing pitch, and buffing log surfaces. They can be used with either an angle grinder or a car buffer with a 5/8” arbor. Osborn brushes can do the job much faster than hand sanding, without being overly aggressive.

Bulk Caulk/ Chink Guns
For large chinking jobs, it may be more economical to use 5 gallon buckets of chink and a bulk loading caulk gun.

Albion DL-59-T13 special deluxe manual gun
Designed for long-life and high volume applications, Albion’s Special Deluxe Manual Drive with 375 lbs of thrust is the choice of professionals. It holds a quart of material and comes with a ½” metal nozzle.

Cox Bulk Loading Gun
The Cox gun is aluminum for light weight and will not rust. 12:1 leverage at the trigger reduces hand fatigue. It comes with a ladder hook and 3 cone nozzles.

Pat Wolfe Log Scriber
Scribing is the most important step in achieving a perfect fitting log when using the chinkless joint method of log building. Use the scribe to mark the contour of the lower log onto the upper log. The Pat Wolfe scriber is made of aluminum with a double bubble adjusting leveling device.

Veritas Transfer Scribe
Used for transferring the contours of one shape onto another, this scribe simplifies any number of jobs. It is fully adjustable from 0” to 12” and includes a bidirectional compass and an extra-hard indelible pencil.
